Adrian Kavanagh, First posted 15th July 2013 with updates as new candidate nominations announced
The post focuses on the candidate selections for the different parties and groupings that were not running a sufficiently large enough number of candidates to warrant a separate post on this site; parties and others that are often classified under the “Others” grouping. A number of these parties/groupings would be left-wing or anti-austerity parties/groupings. But this page does not exclusively cover these as the aim here is to tie together all the different parties and groupings that are not large enough to warrant their own separate post/page.
The groups/parties listed here do include a number of left-wing or anti-austerity parties/groupings, including the Workers and Unemployed Action Group, the Workers Party, the United Left grouping, the (Meath) Centre Left party and Eirigi, but this also includes other parties/groupings such as Direct Democracy Ireland and the Christian Solidarity Party . The level of candidate selections engaged in by the People Before Profit Alliance and Anti Austerity Alliance groupings, which would often be also classified under the Others grouping, have warranted these being allocated a separate post each.
One hundred and forty one candidates across the “Others” grouping will be contesting the 2014 City and County Council elections, including all the different smaller parties/groupings’ candidates who are listed here, as well as the People Before Profit Alliance and Anti Austerity Alliance candidates who are listed elsewhere on this website. There are forty female candidates within these different grouping, with female candidates accounting for 28.4% of the total number of candidates within these different groupings. The “Others” grouping accounted for fifty one candidates at the 2009 City and County Council elections (six of whom were female), so there has been a dramatic increase in candidate levels for this grouping at the 2014 contest.
The candidates listed within the Direct Democracy Ireland grouping currently accounts for twenty candidates (two are female – 10.0%)
The candidates listed as Workers Party candidates in the list above currently account for nine candidates (one is female – 11.1%)
The candidates listed within the United Left grouping currently account for six candidates (one is female – 16.7%)
The candidates listed as Eirigi candidates in the list above currently account for six candidates (one is female – 16.7%)
The candidates listed as Workers and Unemployed Action Group candidates in the list above currently account for three candidates (two are female – 66.7%)
The candidates listed as Republican Sinn Fein in the list above currently account for two candidates (all male)
The candidates listed as (Meath) Centre Left candidates in the list above currently account for three candidate (all male)
The candidates listed as Communist Party of Ireland candidates in the list above currently account for two candidates (male)
The candidates listed as Christian Solidarity Party candidates in the list above currently account for one candidate (male)
The candidates listed as Fís Nua candidates in the list above currently account for six candidate (four female – 66.7%)
The People’s Convention candidates/People’s Candidates are now listed on the Non Party/Independent candidates posting.
While most of the candidates in this grouping would appear likely to be first-time candidates, it does also include a number of more experienced candidates, including a number of incumbents that are mainly associated with the Workers Party, the Workers and Unemployed Action Group and Eirigi, as well as with the People Before Profit Alliance and the Anti Austerity Alliance/Socialist Party. Fifteen (10.6%) candidates across these different groupings currently hold positions on City/County Councils, while another three of these candidates are members of a Borough/Town Council (but not a City/County Council) – one serves both on a Town Council and a County Council – meaning that members of County/City and Borough/Town Councils currently account for 12.8% of the candidates across these different groupings.
The candidates that have been officially selected across these different groupings include

Workers Party is putting forward 3 candidates, one in each city ward.Brian Hearn,Willie Moore and cllr Davy Walsh. http://www.workerspartyireland.net/waterfordcan14.html
By Jorj on November 21, 2013 at 9:09 pm
Thanks for that, but is there any information as to the specific electoral area/city ward that each of these will be contesting? No details on the page and the old Davy Walsh/Willie Moore wards have been changed significantly:
For now I’m guesstimating
Brian Hearne Workers Party: Waterford City East
Willie Moore Workers Party: Waterford City South
Davy Walsh Workers Party: Tramore-Waterford City West

Adrian, is there a page on your website under category “total declared candidates per LEA”? I could be missing it somewhere among the extensive and helpful data on this website. A great resource it will prove to be!
By James Doyle on February 5, 2014 at 1:08 pm
Not at present – still wouldn’t be indicative of overall numbers at this stage as some LEAs well behind/ahead of others in terms of convention selections. May have version of this however once candidate numbers have firmed up after the closing date for candidate nominations.
By Adrian Kavanagh on February 5, 2014 at 1:48 pm
Adrian, thanks for these lists. A brilliant resource. I just want to mention that Shirley Griffen (CPPC) is running in Ballincollig-Carrigaline and myself and Aisling Murray in East Cork. . . Cheers, Paddy (Patrick) Bullman.

Ooops. Sorry – corrected now!
By Adrian Kavanagh on February 8, 2014 at 7:42 pm
hi adrian, direct democracy ireland is not hyperlinked like the other parties on your site could you please do this, also they are not left wing but center, please correct this aswell.
By david on March 1, 2014 at 6:58 pm
That is wrong. Not all parties are “hyperlinked” on this site – hyperlinks are only offered in cases party websites contain lists of their local election candidates. I, as owner of this site, will make my own call on this in any course.
Nowhere do I refer to DDI as being a left wing party – there is nothing to correct here at all.
By Adrian Kavanagh on March 1, 2014 at 7:57 pm
No I do not use hyperlinks for all parties. I only do so in cases where parties have lists of local election candidates on a page of their website. In any case, I’ll choose to make my own decision on the use of hyperlinks on my own website.
In no place whatsoever do I refer to DDI as being a left party – in fact the post goes out of its way to distinguish DDI from the left wing parties and groupings. Nothing whatsoever to correct here.

I’m told that the following four local election candidates have also been successfully nominated by Fís Nua.
They are: Suzanne O’Keeffe Athenry-Oranmore Galway Co.Council
Vera Moloney Ennis Clare Co.Council
Damon Wise Ennis Clare Co. Council
Karen Wise Shannon Clare Co. Council
This makes 3 European Parliament candidates (Cordelia Níc Fhearraigh, Dónal O’Riordáin and Damon Wise) and 6 local election candidates in total for Fís Nua (Niamh O’Brien and Jimmy Higgins are already on your site). Fís Nua does not expect any additions to this list.
Best wishes,
