Adrian Kavanagh, First posted 2nd August 2023, with updates as new candidate nominations are announced
The sixth of a series rolling blog posts in which I will detail the latest information as to candidate selections for the 2024 Local Elections, relating to the different political parties and grouping and/or candidate declarations (as in the case of the non-party grouping). The rule of thumb here will be that I add party candidates only after they have been officially selected to run for the party at a selection convention, or by some other means of candidate selection (e.g. added by party headquarters).
The post focuses on the Labour Party candidate selections.
Declining support levels in the years following General Election 2011 saw Labour losing a large number of seats at the 2014 Local Elections and the 2016 General Election. Having won 132 seats in the City and County Council elections of 2009, Labour’s seat numbers fell to 51 at the 2014 elections. So the 2019 Local Elections werre important for the Labour Party in terms of rebuilding the party in the wake of the losses in 2014 and 2016 (and also a number of defections in the period between 2011 and 2016). In these elections, the party gained a small number of seats and won 57 seats overall. Taking account of defections to/from the party since the 2019 elections, according to my best estimates, I currently estimate that there are 56 Labour Party City and County Councillors.
3rd May 2024: One hundred and seven candidates are listed on this page so far.
Forty four of these candidates (41.1%) are women and sixty two are men (57.9%).
As far as I am aware, at least ninety seven Labour Party selection conventions have taken place so far (or are due to be held soon to confirm a candidate/candidate team). With one hundred and sixty six electoral areas being contested, this means that 58.4% of all constituencies now have at least one Labour Party candidate selected to contest these elections.
Forty six of the Labour Party local election candidates, as listed below, are currently sitting City/County Councillors (incumbents) – 43.0% of the total. 46.8% of male Labour local election candidates are incumbents, as opposed to 38.6% of female Labour candidates. Eleven (23.9%) of these Councillor (incumbent) candidates were co-options.
The candidates contesting the 2024 Local Elections for the Labour Party include the following:

(Please note that any links that are provided here are to posts/newspaper reports offering “evidence” of their candidatures and will normally not link back to candidate websites. I will generally not put in links to candidates’ own webpages here, on the basis of consistency and to manage my own time – if I do this for one candidate, I’ll have to do it for every candidate and we’re probably looking at thousands of candidates across all parties/groupings.)
I will be adding to this list as and when I come across further Labour Party candidate selections.
