Adrian Kavanagh, 2nd January 2014

This post will attempt to list all of the “New Irish”/Non-Irish/UK nationals candidates who have been officially selected to contest this year’s local elections, or else have declared their intentions to contest these elections as independent candidates. This post will also include those candidates who have subsequently gained Irish citizenship on moving to, or after moving to, Ireland.

At present (as of 8th May 2014) I can account for thirty one candidacies in this group, including eight female (25.8%) and twenty three male (74.2%) candidates. Continue reading

Local Election candidate selections overview

LE2014_TotalCandidatesJan31 Figure 1: Total number of candidates selected by county/local authority area as of 31st January 2014. Not surprisingly, the higher number of candidates are associated with the more urban counties and/or the larger counties. But, as Figure 1 shows, there are some interesting exceptions here. Note that this information is only up to date as of Friday 31st January 2014 (3.00pm) – a series of selection conventions in one specific county/local authority area would of course significantly change that county/area’s relative ranking on an updated version of this map.

With all the final candidate lists added to the site now (including the candidates for the delayed Ballybay-Clones contest), I have accounted for 2,038 candidate selections/declarations for the 2014 Local Elections, as detailed across the different posts on this website.

The electoral areas with the highest number of selected/declared candidates, as accounted for across these different pages,  are

  • Ennis (27),
  • Swords (26),
  • Sligo (24),
  • Balbriggan (23),
  • Wexford and Letterkenny (22),
  • Ballincollig-Carrigaline, Dun Laoghaire,  Drogheda, Kildare-Newbridge and Conamara (21),
  • Ballymun, Lucan,  Clonmel, Nenagh, Carlow, Wicklow and Kilkenny-City East (20),
  • North Inner City, Bray, West Cork and Limerick City East (19),
  • Inishowen, Ballina, Templemore-Thurles, Limerick City West, Tramore-Waterford City West, Ardee, Gorey, New Ross, Beaumont-Donaghmede, Crumlin-Kimmage, Pembroke-South Dock, Castleknock and Dundrum (18),
  • West Mayo, Ballyfermot-Drimnagh,Mulhuddart, Muinebeag and Celbridge-Leixlip (17),
  • Donegal, Cabra-Finglas, Borris in Ossory-Mountmellick, Portlaoise, Naas, Killarney, Shannon, West Clare and Athenry-Oranmore (16),
  • Galway City Central, Tuam, Maynooth, Athlone (Westmeath), Mullingar-Coole, Mullingar-Kilbeggan, Navan, Dundalk-Carlingford, Dundalk South, Cashel-Tipperary, Waterford City East, Listowel, South And West Kerry and Limerick City North  (15).

In all, sixty three (46.0%) electoral areas have fifteen, or more, candidates contesting them. With just eight candidates, Ballyjamesduff will have the smallest number of candidates of any electoral area in the state. Next lowest are the electoral areas of Cork City North Central, Cork City North East, Ballinasloe and Carrick on Shannon with nine local election candidates each. Eight other electoral areas have just ten candidates, including Killaloe, Cork City South West, Stillorgan, Athy, Cappamore-Kilmallock, Ballymahon and Birr.

There will be an average of 2.15 candidates per seat at these City and County Council elections, up from an average level of 2.07 at the 2009 elections.

The electoral area with the highest candidate numbers per seat ratio is Ennis, with an average of 3.38 candidates per seat, just ahead of Wicklow and Kilkenny City-East, both with candidates per seat ratios of 3.33. Cork City North West has a candidates per seat ratio of 3.25, while a candidates per seat ratio of 3.00 is associated with Tramore-Waterford City West, Ardee and Crumlin-Kimmage.

The electoral area with the lowest candidate numbers per seat ratio is Ballyjamesduff, with an average of 1.33 candidates per seat, just ahead of Cappamore-Kilmallock, with a candidates per seat ratios of 1.43. A candidates per seat ratio of 1.50 is associated with a number of electoral areas, including Clondalkin, Ballinasloe, Enniscorthy and Carrick-On-Shannon.

Past not an entirely different country? A look back at the 1985 Local Elections

Adrian Kavanagh, 22nd November 2013

With little more than half a year until the 2014 Local Elections, I thought it would be useful to look back at a previous local elections contest that took place in what may well prove to be largely similar circumstances to the context of next year’s contest, namely the 1985 City and County Council elections. How low can you go? The worst performing candidates at the 2009 Local Elections

Adrian Kavanagh, 22nd November 2013

In a contest there has to be winners. And there has to be losers. Some election candidates can win big. Others can lose…badly. As the 2011 General Election results showed, for every Shane Ross or Enda Kenny there also has to be a Peadar O Ceallaigh (with his 18 vote tally in Dublin South East).  But with smaller constituencies at local elections (and fewer votes to share around as a result), the tendency to go even lower in these contests is decidedly notable. So how did the 2009 Local Elections fare in the regard and who were the candidates winning the lowest vote numbers/shares?  Continue reading

Adrian Kavanagh, 19th November 2013

This post looks at voter turnout levels in the recent Seanad and Court of Appeals referendum contests, making specific reference to turnout differences at the Dail constituency level but also to turnout differences (based on electoral division-level figures) within the Dublin City area (or rather the six Dail constituencies administered by the Dublin City Returning Officer). Female candidates contesting the 2014 Local Elections

Adrian Kavanagh, 30th October 2013 – post updated as and when new female candidates are added/female candidates withdraw

314 female candidates contested the 2009 City and County Council elections, accounting for 17.2% of the total number of candidates. For the 2014 elections, given the impending introduction of gender quotas at the next general election and given the likely impact of larger constituency units (with more seats per constituency), the expectation was that more female candidates would be contesting these elections. This has turned out to be the case, but could the improved levels of female candidacies be really viewed as a dramatic improvement? This post will list all the names of the female candidates who have been officially selected to contest the 2014 Local Elections by the different political parties and groupings, as well as the independent female candidates who have declared their intention to contest these elections.

Based on the list of candidates below, there are four hundred and forty officially selected/declared female candidates (out of a total of two thousand and thirty eight candidates), with female candidates currently accounting for 21.6% of the total number of candidates selected/declared that I have accounted for to date. This number includes two candidates – Sharon Keogan and Angela Maher – who are contesting two different electoral areas.

The Younger Ones: Local Elections 2014 candidates aged between 18 and 35

Adrian Kavanagh, 29th October 2013

In a similar vein to an earlier post relating to 2011 General Election candidates, this page seeks to list the names, and party affiliations, of all the local elections candidates whose ages fall in the 18-35 years age category – candidates whose ages fall in the 18-30 years category will be denoted by a * Please note that this is an incomplete list due to difficulties in accessing age information in a large number of cases. Given the large number of candidates involved at local elections and the difficulties involved in getting age details for some candidates, the likelihood is that I will miss out on some names that should be included here but I will do my best to ensure this list is as accurate as possible. If you note any glaring absences (especially if you are one of the candidates that should be listed below/are incorrectly listed below) , please feel free to comment below or to Tweet me at @AdrianKavanagh or else to email me at adrian.p.kavanagh@nuim.ie instead.

At present (22nd July 2014)  I can currently account for two hundred and fifty nine candidates in the 18-35 age category (12.7% of the total number of local election candidates) – one hundred and eighty five (71.4%) of the candidates in this group are male while seventy four (28.6%) of the candidates in this group are female.
